With @Billy announcing My Love Is Winter on Oceania, we thought we’d post this recording of the song from the Brisbane show of 2010.

Download full show here on the Smashing Pumpkins Audio Archive.

Huge news update from Billy on the future Smashing Pumpkins plans.

Run down of Billy’s announcement:

  • New Smashing Pumpkins song, Owata, to be released within in the next 2 weeks. (YAY!)
  • The Pumpkins will release a new album as part of the Teargarden project. The album will be called Oceania (in Billy’s video it features a picture of Australia … we like this!) and will be released later this year, will feature 9-12 songs (approx).
  • Also the Smashing Pumpkins have reached an agreement with EMI (after 10 years) to finally release reissues of all the past material, along with songs from the archives.
  • By the end of this year we will see reissues of Gish, Siamese Dream and Pisces Iscariot. Then following years of Mellon Collie, TAFH, Adore and Billy makes mention of re-releasing Machina “in the correct order” and even perhaps remixing how the record sounds. (We love this!) … these will also come out on a possible vinyl, also as part of a digital boxset. Billy explains it best, we suggest watching the video.

Watch Billy announce this on Facebook, this is a huge bit of news with a great approach to how it is released for us fans.

Listen to “Lightning Strikes” and download tomorrow on SmashingPumpkins.com

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS released their ninth free track “Lightning Strikes” today, Thursday, March 17. It will first be available for 24 hours at Rollingstone.com, where it can be downloaded at www.rollingstone.com.  Then starting Friday, March 18, it will be available for free download at www.smashingpumpkins.com; the site also offers a widget enabling fans to host the song anywhere on the web.  Pumpkins leader BILLY CORGAN says the song is “dedicated with affection to Mark Tulin…and all our great Japanese fans who are in our prayers.”  Mark Tulin, the bassist and founding member of the pioneering psych-rockers the Electric Prunes, died last month.  Tulin played in the Pumpkins and appears on tracks from the band’s Teargarden By Kaleidyscope work.  He also toured with Corgan in the band Spirits In the Sky in 2009.

“Lightning Strikes” is now the ninth song to be offered to fans via free download.  It is from the Pumpkins’ Teargarden By Kaleidyscope, an in-progress 44-song work. Since December 2009, the band has been releasing one song at a time for free, with eight of the songs also available on two physical EPs that were released in 2010.

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS—singer/guitarist BILLY CORGAN, guitarist JEFF SCHROEDER, drummer MIKE BYRNE and bassist NICOLE FIORENTINO—recorded “Lightning Strikes,” says CORGAN, “by all the members of the band after we came off our last tour” at the end of 2010.  “I feel this song organically hints at new directions without being forced.”

“Lightning Strikes” has an interesting back story. Explains CORGAN: “It was supposed to be more of a fun thing, a song originally written for the Electric Prunes. But I found an element in it that suggested a bigger picture, and unfortunately I stole it back from them. The lyric in my mind combines the isolation of modern life with the need for a never ending romantic story.”

It has been a year since The Smashing Pumpkins released the first Teargarden by Kaleidyscope song, Song for A Son, on the 8th of December 2009 for free. At first many fans and music industry people were confused by this release method set out by Billy, but a  year later it looks like the message and vision is clear.

What a year it has been, many new songs - some recorded, some yet to be and some left on the stage. A world tour hitting parts of the world the Smashing Pumpkins haven’t been to in a decade and places they stop on a regular basis, no matter where though the live reviews have been glowing for the Smashing Pumpkins line up.

So a huge thank you to Billy, Jeff, Nicole and Mike for this past year, and the years to come. The future is bright, we are with you.

One of 99 rare ‘fool’s-gold obelisk’ and alternate Teargarden Theme found:
I am lucky to have recieved one of the 99 out of 10,000 copies of Smashing Pumpkins’ Teargarden by Kaleidyscope Vol. 1: Songs for a Sailor EP to have the Fool’s-gold obelisk and a different version of the seven-inch. I wanted to share pictures and digital versions of the alternate Teargarden Theme with other pumpkin heads out there! I didn’t even know what I had for more than the first month I had it, it wasn’t until I heard the regular track that I started to ask questions. I am one super happy Smashing Pumpkins fan to have this rare release! Enjoy the downloads. NW
Listen to instrumental “Teargarden Theme” only found on 99 of the 10,000 copies of Teargarden Vol. 1 here.
